Crouppy New Years

Well the New Year has already started out very eventful! Addison woke up in the middle of the night last night barely able to breathe! She has been dealing with a runny nose since last Sunday and seemed to be getting better until yesterday. In a complete panic I called 411 trying to get the number for a pediatric urgent care place that I saw close to the house to see if they were open late night. To my luck they couldn't seem to find the place I was talking about so I threw Addi in the car and Kyle and I drove to the regular urgent care around the corner. They of course were closed. I thought urgent care was 24 hours?? Anyways I said forget about it and go to the hospital. When we got there they put us back to see the doctor right away. They kept on trying to get her oxygen levels with that little clamp looking thing that you put on your finger, Did they really think an 8 month old is going to keep something like that on!? She fought with it for a long time and then they tried it on her toes and it finally worked. The doctor came in and listened to her lungs and ordered a breathing treatment. When we were attempting the breathing treatment she kept on fidgeting trying to get away from the fog that was coming out. She didn't seem to like it at all but I was glad that I didn't have to keep a mask on her mouth, which I know wouldn't have worked with her. After the treatment the doctor came in and said that its looking like she has either RSV or Croup. After evaluating her a little longer and giving her a steroid treatment for her lungs, they came to the conclusion that it was croup. Croup is a virus in the lungs just above the vocal cords. It makes the throat inflamed and makes it hard to breathe. They can't give any meds for it since it's a virus so I have to keep her room very humidified (which is hard since the humidifier that we have is mine from when I was a baby, so it's ancient now) and sit with her in the bathroom with the hot water on full blast so she can breathe in the steam. My poor little girl feels terrible and her cough sounds like a sick dog barking. Breaks my heart to see her like that but considering all that is going through she woke up this morning in a pretty decent mood. Lets all pray that she gets better soon!

Joys of children, huh? Max has bronchiolitis over here, so I feel your pain. We're using a nebulizer too. A good way to get her to use it is to feed her a bottle or sippy and hold the fog right over her nose while she eats. It has saved my sanity doing that. Max still breathes the meds in, but also stays calm and doesn't scream during the treatment! Hope that helps!
Happy New Year!
